What’s Involved

Timings: 2 hour facilitated workshop session (timings may be adjusted slightly eg. for full day bookings)

Venue: Tameside Local Studies & Archives

Cost: £111.50 for TMBC schools / £122 for non-TMBC schools

Just what was life at home like during the Second World War? Use newspapers, maps and photographs from the time to mull over military decisions and understand the risks faced and impact felt by citizens. Uncover how life changed for the men, women and children living on the Home Front, explore the effects that bombs and air raids had on Tameside itself, and find out about those in local communities who helped keep people safe during air raids.

With help from the Archive team, make your way around our three enquiry-based Rapid Research Rotation Stations to:

  • investigate copies of original air raid maps to examine local air raid targets, often in more central areas of Manchester, and consider why and how certain buildings and areas were chosen.
  • unearth information from newspapers and other archival sources to explore the effects that bombs and air raids had on Tameside itself.
  • consider the roles played by the people tasked with giving assistance and guidance in the face of the threat.

We provide everything you’ll need for your time travels.

Learning Opportunities

History:

  • better understand the impact of the Second World War on those who remained at home, and to the infrastructure of the country.
  • research the history of an area using archive source material, such as newspapers, maps and historic images.
  • undertake research for a local history or thematic study.

Geography:

  • Use maps, identify key topographical features and understand land-use in populated areas.

PSHE:

  • reflect on mental health, different feelings humans can experience and keeping safe.

Venue Information

This workshop is delivered at Tameside Local Studies & Archives:

  • There is a small car park at Local Studies which would accommodate a Ford Transit style or similar sized Minibus, but not a full-size coach or bus.
  • Please let us know if you would like your class to eat lunch at Local Studies and Archives and we will plan your sessions accordingly.
  • A site risk assessment is available on request.
