What’s Involved

Timings: 2 hour facilitated workshop session (timings may be adjusted slightly eg. for full day bookings)

Do you know what your town looked like 150 years ago? The towns of Tameside have changed dramatically since the Victorian era. Enormous population increases, the rise of railways and canals, and the factories, mines, and mills brought about by the industrial revolution – all these and more have contributed to the Tameside we know today.

Who lived in Tameside during the Victorian era, and what did they do?

What makes Victorian buildings distinctive, and do you know any in your town?

How have changes over time created the towns we recognise today?

With help from the Archive team, your class will investigate your way around our three Rapid Research Rotation Stations. Using maps, business directories, and photographs from Tameside’s local archives pupils will reveal:

  1. the industries, trades and people that shaped our towns.
  2. how to tell whether local buildings might be Victorian.
  3. how the areas they live in have evolved.

We provide everything you’ll need for your time travels.

Learning Opportunities

History:

  • consider how broader historical changes of the Victorian era impacted their specific local area.
  • look at the impact of the industrial revolution on every aspect of Tameside - residential, commercial, industrial, and natural areas.
  • undertake research for a local history or thematic study.

Geography:

  • identify key topographical features and how land-use has changed over time in Tameside.
  • describe types of settlement and land use, trading activity, and the distribution of natural resources including energy, food, minerals and water in Tameside past and present.
  • consider the relationship between their own immediate home environment and the wider area.

Design and Technology:

  • consider the distinctive characteristics of Victorian architecture
  • identify and recognize Victorian buildings in their town

At the Archive: you can book to combine with a second workshop for a facilitated full day experience.

Venue Information

This workshop is delivered at Tameside Local Studies & Archives

  • There is a small car park at Local Studies which would accommodate a Ford Transit style or similar sized Minibus, but not a full-size coach or bus.
  • Please let us know if you would like your class to eat lunch at Local Studies and Archives and we will plan your sessions accordingly.
  • A site risk assessment is available on request.
