Tameside’s Town of Culture summer programme has been announced, and Stalybridge has a sensational summer of fun planned for families!

From wild art sessions in the park and animation workshops, to theatre shows designed just for children, there is something for everyone and lots to keep the kids entertained over the summer break.

Here’s the lowdown of the key events #SummerinTameside…

Wild Art - Views of Tameside

18th August, 11am - 3pm

Gorse Hall, Stalybridge

Join us in mark making, smudging and leaf bashing prints. Make your own charcoal sticks over an open fire and create giant bubbles with sticks to glide over Stalybridge…

Mavis and Malcolm - theatre for children

1st and 30th August, various time

Astley Cheetham Art Gallery, Stalybridge

Tameside’s own Two Boards & A Passion will perform 2 plays  “Time to Play” and “Beside The Sea” written for children aged 2 – 4 and their parents.  

Both plays feature Mavis and Malcolm, somewhat quirky grandparents who encourage the audience to join in with singing and actions throughout. The theatre company received a Town of Culture grant to put the shows on for local children over the summer holidays.

Glorious Gorse Hall - audio trail

1st August - 4th September

Gorse Hall Park, Stalybridge

A wellbeing heritage and nature audio trail will encourage families to take their time on a walk around beautiful Gorse Hall taking in the landscape and buildings of the beautiful Gorse Hall estate.

‍

Additionally, the park boasts a new giant picture frame called “The Viewpoint”.

The incredible structure, designed and made by willow-weaving Manchester artist, Cherry Chung, has been made with steel and willow to create a real focal point that frames the picturesque Tameside landscape all the way to Hartshead Pike. The frame has been commissioned by Tameside Council using Greater Manchester Arts funding.

Snailybridge - Snail-o-vison!

17th August, 10am - 12 noon and 1pm - 3pm

Stalybridge Civic Hall

In response to the theme of slow making and inspired by the pace of snails, Phantasmagoria (CIC)- an Ashton-under-Lyne Arts based hub and Mossley based artist Rachel Wood - have created an animation workshop where participants will storyboard a story featuring snails.

‍

Participants will build a set, create plasticine characters and create an animation using simple stop motion software. There will also be a Splendid Snail Hunt with painted snail shells hidden in the nooks and crannies around Stalybridge, with residents being encouraged to make their own by hiding painted snail shells and pasta shells.

‍

There's also plenty of activities taking place at Stalybridge Library, Cheetham Park and Astley Cheetham Art Gallery throughout the summer holidays. More activities will be added in coming weeks…click here for the full programme!
