The sun is set to shine, the bunting is hung and local ale is on tap. It must be Whit Friday! After a two year break we cannot wait to hear those traditional brass tones reverberating around Tameside.
On 10th June 2022, Whit Friday will host nine band contests across Tameside. They all offer something different; from “village feel” contests at Carrbrook and Heyrod to stadium stages at Broadoak, Mossley and Hurst Village. Stalybridge is a town centre contest, whereas the Tame Valley contest takes place in a lovely family pub.
This year, the Heyrod contest is working on reducing waste, hopefully with no single-use plastic used at the event. This will be a major leap forward as previously just this one contest creates a lot of landfill waste. If it goes well this could then be used as a blueprint to cut waste across the rest of the borough and create more sustainable events.
The great thing about the contest is it attracts a wide range of different bands; local such as Stalybridge Old Band to further afield - Emmental are currently enroute from Switzerland! We love to see youth bands coming through, and have worked hard to secure prize money to try and focus on these younger ensembles.
All the contests are run by volunteers, and are looking for support. If you would like to help please get in touch!
