This autumn, Stalybridge will glow with the warmth of candlelight and the brilliance of live classical music with the arrival of the first Concert by Candlelight events.

Launching Friday evening on the 3rd of October, the first concert will feature a stunning double bill:

  • The Talland String Quartet and students at the Royal Northern College of Music, will open the evening with timeless autumnal classics from Haydn to Tchaikovsky.
  • Vulva Voce, fresh from Glastonbury, will follow with genre-defying works from their debut EP Maddalena, blending classical, folk, jazz, and techno in a bold celebration of underrepresented voices in music.

This is not just a concert, it’s a brilliant celebration of creativity with the power of music to bring people together. Don’t miss your chance to experience this magical series in one of Tameside’s most atmospheric venues.

Talland String Quartet

The Talland Quartet, a versatile ensemble based in Manchester, are dedicated to sharing their passion for chamber music with others. Formed during their time at the Royal Northern College of Music, they were chosen to participate in the 23/24 Hans Keller forum in Cambridge, receiving guidance from Alasdair Beatson, Richard Ireland, and John Myerscough. The quartet received multiple prizes at the RNCM, including competing in the Christopher Rowland Chamber Group of the Year Award. They were selected to perform at the RNCM's Original Voices Festival and worked with composer Eden Longson to premiere a new piece at the Enys Chamber Music Festival. During the 2023 Manchester International Festival, they performed in a pre-show set at Depot Mayfield, supporting Anna Meredith and receiving coaching on her piece Tuggemo.

Vulva Voce

Vulva Voce is a boundary-pushing string quartet blending classical, folk, jazz and techno. They exclusively perform works by women and underrepresented artists, including original and commissioned pieces. Recognised by The Recording Academy, BBC Radio 3 and CLASH, they’ve collaborated with Grammy winners and Glastonbury headliners Ash. Committed to a more sustainable touring model, the band continues to reduce their footprint and advocate for a greener industry.

The group will be playing music from their debut EP Maddalena - inspired by 16th-century composer Maddalena Casulana - the first woman composer to have a book of her music printed and published under her own name, in the history of western music. Vulva Voce’s original tracks, Luteal and Hysteria, sample Casulana’s melodies, re-contextualising them in jazz, folk, pop and techno grooves.

The Concerts By Candlelight events are part of the vibrant new programme at Stalybridge Civic Hall, bringing fresh cultural experiences, live music, and community events to the heart of Tameside.
